For the past years I’ve traveled to Alaska to work on a commercial fishing boat in the Bering Sea. Thousands of gulls accompany us out to the fishing grounds while eagles greet us in port to scavenge from our nets. I am constantly startling birds off coveted positions on the bow and rails. In every photograph they are airborne only because I have interrupted them. There is a moment before each image where they look directly at me, sometimes with hostility, sometimes fear. Then they surrender to flight and are at their most beautiful. I am in love with the formations of their wings, their grace, and their savageness.
